We all have to start somewhere, and that somewhere is usually toward the bottom of the totem pole. Once you are comfortable in a job, the next thing you want to do is start moving up in the company. The bigger paycheck could motivate this, or it could be the confidence and increased self-worth you have from accomplishing these tasks. How do we separate ourselves from other employees so that we stand out enough to be selected for promotions? There are several things you can do to accomplish this. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Positivity

Have a Good Attitude

You need to be a person that others want to be around. This doesn’t mean you have to be bubbly or in your face happy all the time.  Try not to be grumpy or negative about work tasks or work in general. Souny West shared that, “While it’s important to understand the balance of office politics, individuals who can rise above the temptations stand out most as those I think would be the fairest to others in management roles.” Staying away for the drama that happens at the workplace is a must. We all have bad days, but if we can stay upbeat and personable, it can help our chances of promotion.

Make Jobs Easier

“It’s ironic, but the best way to get promoted it to make your boss’ job easier. And the best way to do that is to make his or her job obsolete — you’re not really putting your manager out of a job – you’re allowing him or her to trust your work, “said  Ankur Gopal.  Show your boss that you are ready for more and more laborious tasks. Do this by doing the tasks you have now well. Become his or her go-to person when a problem arises.

Team

Be a Team Player

Who makes the best supervisors? Is it those that are only out for themselves, or is it those that raise all those around them as they go? Joshua Lee from Stand Out Authority said that he loves to promote people that help their colleagues instead of stepping on them in their climb up the ladder. Being a team player can go a long way on your path to the top!

Tell Them

Let your boss know you are looking to move up and get a promotion. Before telling your boss that you want a promotion, make sure you are doing everything that is asked of you and more. Talking about a raise before that time could lead to a very awkward conversation. If you are exceeding expectations and you feel that your boss will feel the same, then go for it. When the time comes, it could give you an advantage. Your name will be on their mind when they start looking.

Start to better yourself in the areas in which you could improve and keep going on those that you are already great at. Get those promotions!
